My friend Theodora recently told me she wants to make $100,000 in the next 12 months …
I asked her if she would be willing to invest in paid traffic, and she said she could invest around $500 a month.
So I challenged her a little bit …
I said, “Ok, if you invest $500 per month in traffic, what’s that per year? $6,000. So you want to invest $6000 and clear $100,000 in the next 12 months. Do you think that’s going to happen? Could that even happen?”
Yes, maybe—if you had insanely good follow up you might be able to do that. But for the average person, especially starting out, this is a little bit unlikely.
So I said to her, “What’s the maximum you could start out with?” And she said, “Maybe $1000.” $1,000 per month would be $12,000 in a year.
If you invested $12,000 per year in traffic to make back $100,000, is there any way this could happen? You would still be multiplying your money by about eight times, so it would still be very challenging.
I explained, “If you can only start out with $1000 in paid traffic every month, that’s fine, but as soon as you get sales coming in, you need to scale—and reinvest all those profits back into the paid traffic.”
For example, let’s say you spend $1000 this month and get one high-ticket affiliate commission for $4,500. So you spent $1000, and now you have a profit of about $3,500.
Now depending on your comfort level, you should take a majority of that $3,500 profit, and you should reinvest it back into traffic the next month. So instead of only having $1000 to invest next month, now you would have closer to $3000. That’s how you scale and start seeing exponential results.
I realize that many of you reading this don’t have much money to invest in your marketing at first. Maybe you only have $500 or $1000 a month. And some of you might have much less, like maybe only $200 a month.
If you don’t have much money, don’t let it bother you, because a lot of people in this industry started out with $200 a month or less. But they got successful because as soon as they get those sales coming in, they reinvested it all back into the traffic.
How I Used This ‘Scaling’ Technique to Get Rich
In 2011, I had been in this industry almost three years, and I still was not making consistent money …
I would have odd months where I would make $1000 or $2000, and then sometimes I would go an entire month and make nothing. Back then it was a big event if I got a sale online.
I remember waiting for the bus, because I had an office that I rented out about an hour away from where I lived. I didn’t have a car at the time, so for about a year, I was commuting to and from work on a bus.
On the bus, I remember this one moment very clearly… One day I was in the back of the bus checking my old iPhone, and suddenly I saw that I made a sale for $97. I was so excited I almost jumped out of my seat!
Back then, I used to get more excited about a $97 sale than do today with a $50,000 sale. So in those days, if I cleared $1000 or $2000 for the month, that was a great month for me.
I remember the next month making about $3000, and that was the first time I decided to take the majority of that $3000 and putting it back into traffic.
The next month that $3,000 had turned into $5000. And I remember these numbers quite clear. I remember the first time I made $7800 in a single month.
This was point where I thought to myself, “Wow, if I could do this all year long, I could make over $100k in one year!”
It had taken me almost three years to get to this stage, and now things were starting to look pretty good. The next month, I took the majority of that $7,800 and reinvested that back into traffic.
This resulted in my first $15,000 month—and now I was really thinking to myself, “Wow, surely it can’t get any better than this. This is insane. Okay, if I could do that every month, that would be close $200,000 per year.” That was October 2011.
But in November my income went down. I went down from 15 grand to about 8 grand, and I thought, “Yeah, I knew I was right. I knew it couldn’t get any better than this.” But I still reinvested most of it.
The very next month in December, I made $45,000, and I remember it like it was yesterday…
I remember going back to my parents’ farm for Christmas, and I remember taking my laptop and getting into my dad’s truck. And I wouldn’t let him drive away from the Wi-Fi connection.
I said, “Dad just don’t drive off yet, I’ve got to do this sale.” And I made another $2000 sale right there. I worked right up until midnight on New Years Eve, just hustling, trying to get every single sale I could. The result—$45,000 that month—December 2011. The very next month, in January 2012, I made $81,000.
This ‘Scaling Technique’ Took Me from Zero to over $1 Million per Month in Less Than a Year
Reinvesting my profits helped me scale very, very quickly …
And within six months, we were doing about $300,000 per month. By the end of 2012, we cleared 400,000 per month, and in 2013 we finally started doing over a million a month.
The point of me sharing this with you is that wherever you are right now, as far as marketing budget, just start reinvesting those profits.
As long as you reinvest those commissions, and as long as you follow up really well—you WILL convert and make A LOT of Money.
You convert this traffic you’re getting by being relentless in the follow up. Then when you convert those commissions, you reinvest the majority of those commissions back into the business. And twelve months from now, you could be spending $10,000 a month in traffic.
Now some of you don’t like to hear those words, “Spending $10,000 a month in traffic” because it has all kinds of negative connotations around it. But personally, I like to invest in traffic, because it makes me a great return on my money.
These days, I’m spending many hundreds of thousands of dollars on traffic every month. We’ve got invoices going out, and we are paying invoices these days for anywhere from $50,000 — $70,000.
Seventy grand here, eighty grand there, we’re sending out real money—Big money—on traffic, and I feel great about that, because I know traffic is the engine that keeps my business growing.
If you do the same thing—reinvest your profits and scale—you will make well over $100,00 in the next 12 months.
Until you go through the experience you won’t learn it on a really deep level. So you probably still will have to go through the experience somewhat to fully get it. But I promise you once you do then you’ll understand it at a much deeper level.
